Meet Bisharo Farah, who joined the HealthFinders team in May as our first female Somali

Community Health Worker (CHW)! Bisharo, who grew up in Faribault, is a current student at South Central College studying child development. As a CHW, she will be working to improve community health through home visits, diabetes classes, and being a familiar resource for Somali community members. Bisharo initially learned about HealthFinders by accompanying her parents to their appointments and acting as an interpreter. She says that in addition to language being a significant barrier to accessing health resources for Somali community members, gender plays a huge role. “Somali females get uncomfortable just talking about health with male providers or interpreters, which can be a huge barrier for them getting treated. I am glad I can provide comfort and interpretation for them,” she explains. Bisharo also says that diabetes and high blood pressure are common, but preventable problems within the Faribault Somali community. She is looking forward to leading the first Somali diabetes class series starting June 10 and teaching community members about small lifestyle changes that can make a big impact. She is “excited to work here and make a difference in my community in my own way.” Welcome to the team, Bisharo!
