Dear HealthFinders Community,
A little over a month ago, I wrote to you about the challenges HealthFinders is facing as new federal policies disrupt public health agencies and threaten our nation’s safety net. The impact of some of these policy changes is becoming clear.
The Minnesota Department of Human Services has cancelled a key grant that supported HealthFinders behavioral health services as the result of an abrupt cancellation of a federal grant.
What does this mean for HealthFinders’ patients?
Our team is making difficult decisions to ensure we can support community and further our mission. Each and every decision is being anchored in our values.
To minimize any harm to patients, youth, and their families, and to position HFC to be as resilient as possible going forward, we made some immediate changes including reducing hours and eliminating one position. In addition, we’re restructuring our youth programs team and will not be filling open clinical operations positions. Our goal is to consolidate services to ensure we are meeting patient needs. Our team will be stretching to ensure continued care through the spring and will re-group over the summer to see if this model is feasible. These changes are intended to not simply react to the current loss in funding but also position HFC to maintain continuity of care as much as possible regardless of what happens next. This is how we have always handled change - both growth and consolidation - instead of simply adding programs we craft an organization-wide response. Our interconnected health model is built intentionally, at every step.
I also want you to know that the Mobile Opioid Support Team (MOST), which currently has a caseload of about 173 patients, is at risk of disappearing. MOST is a collaboration of law enforcement, county, partner agencies, and healthcare providers that is directly tackling the opioid crisis in our community and getting our neighbors critical treatment and support. It would be a huge loss to our community if the program ended.
The way in which these funds are being abruptly cancelled is cruel. Vulnerable youth and adults experiencing substance use and mental health challenges and crises are suddenly without care. These programs are built on trust, and the sudden removal of care or support will cause harm. HealthFinders’ staff and partners are working hard to mitigate any harm, but it is a challenge.
What’s next?
Over the years, we’ve intentionally developed diverse funding streams for our work that includes grants, insurance reimbursements, and, importantly, contributions from our community – from you and others who believe that everyone should have access to healthcare. The community contributes $1.2 million each year, funds that support core programs and enable us to be nimbler and more responsive to community needs.
We are not naïve. There remain real threats on the horizon. But we also have much to be excited about. We have secured grants to support our school-based health center, mobile outreach and engagement, and expansion in Owatonna. Our dental program continues to see unprecedented volume and our treatment programs are expanding.
