Patients now have an easier way to connect with HealthFinders

Updated: Aug 27

Communicating with HealthFinders just got a little easier thanks to a new SMS text messaging service. Now patients can easily request to refill medication, schedule appointments, or communicate with their providers via text. The goal of the program is to increase accessibility for patients and eliminate the phone tag that patients and staff often run into. The SMS feature provides patients with appointment reminders, provider instructions, additional information in their preferred language – English, Spanish, or Somali.

HealthFinders Associate Director Daisey Sanchez says the main barrier is getting patients to opt-in to receive text messages.

"We are continuing to develop new ways for patients to connect with us, and with their care teams. As we have added programs and capacity, our phone lines have been overwhelmed with traffic. We believe text messaging will help patients be in closer and more rapid connection with HFC. Patients can get individualized responses faster, and staff can more seamlessly coordinate care across programs and care teams."

Once patients have opted in, they can text the main line to request a service. They will then receive a response with the appropriate contact number for their specific concerns. Patients also have the option to send a text message directly to the service they request – dental, medical, or behavioral health. Patients are also able to request an appointment, but the system does not directly schedule the appointment.

Messages from patients sent during business hours will be addressed on the same day. If a patient sends a text outside of business hours, they will receive a response on the next business day.

To enroll, text 507-419-9505 and type  ‘enroll.’ You will get a response instantly that requests you to respond with ‘Yes’ to opt into receiving messages from HFC. Patients will then be able to communicate directly with HFC staff and get access to the care and services they need faster and more efficiently.
