HealthFinders Collaborative welcomes Dr. Brian Wariboko, M.B.B.S., to a new role as Medical Director. Dr. Wariboko was born in Sierra Leone and grew up in Nigeria. He worked in rural Nigeria and attended medical school at the University of Port Harcourt College of Health Sciences in Choba, Nigeria, before moving to the U.S. to begin his residency at Riverside Health System in Virginia. In 2017, Wariboko moved to Minnesota and started his work in family medicine as a provider for the Mayo Clinic Health System in Faribault, Minnesota. When Brian arrived in Minnesota, he immediately noticed inequities in Minnesota's health care landscape, which was far more difficult for him to adjust to than any below zero temperatures. He was troubled by the amount of people within Faribault and the Twin Cities area who do not receive adequate health coverage due to their immigration status, race, or ethnicity. The disparities were glaring, and he was inspired to be an agent of change for those individuals by providing equitable and affordable health care for all in Rice County. Brian was connected with HealthFinders in 2019 and began volunteering and serving on the HealthFinders board. When asked about his position as a Mayo Clinic Health System Representative on the board, Wariboko stated, "Being part of an organization which serves those with limited resources – by finding and leveraging available resources in the community – seems tailor-made for me." In his new role as Medical Director, Wariboko has big aspirations for 2021 and beyond. He is very eager to develop more avenues for using scarce resources to meet the needs of underserved communities. "HealthFinders is a strong system with many resources," he said. "But we can only go so far when there is a disconnect. We must continuously develop outreach initiatives and strategies to inform those who do not know about our vast services." With COVID-19 vaccines slowly starting to roll out, Wariboko is committed to ensuring everyone who seeks vaccination receives it safely. He is optimistic about the potential of new technology that has helped HealthFinders adapt to the pandemic's difficulties, especially virtual visits. This new tool has improved accessibility and is growing as a popular resource for patients and staff.
