Rooted in mission, HealthFinders Collaborative (HFC) supports the health of Rice County community members in whatever way, shape, or form needed. Recently, the Faribault Food Shelf closed its location in the Faribo West Mall. While HFC was saddened by the closure of this food shelf, the organization realized it needed to play a role in filling the hole that was left in the community. One program that found itself without a home due to the closure was the Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS). NAPS is a program designed to help seniors living on a fixed income get the nutritional foods they need on a monthly basis. Channel One food bank in Rochester, recognizing the need to keep the Faribault site up and running, approached HealthFinders to become the new host for the NAPS program.
HealthFinders Steps InHealthFinders is thrilled to be able to fill this role, supplementing the other food security programs that the organization has been working to develop. In addition to the growing community garden and the CSA food share program, this new food distribution will provide non-perishable food to members of the community on a more long-term basis than any of the other programs. The program, which started in early August at the HealthFinders Faribault location, is also being adapted to fit the needs of the current COVID-19 situation. While the original style was a pickup at a predetermined location, HealthFinders is working to develop a food delivery program to reduce contact between staff and the clients of the food share program. No matter the current situation, HealthFinders will always strive to help those in our community while keeping them healthy. Other functions of the Faribault Food Shelf have been partially absorbed by the Community Action Center of Northfield’s Food Shelf, a location that does not require clients to be residents within the Northfield city limits.
