February is American Heart Month! All year long, healthy lifestyles are promoted and supported at HealthFinders Collaborative (HFC). HFC’s fundamental belief is in supporting people’s inherent capacity to be well, a belief that plays a large part in Pura Vida, a component of the organization’s
wellness programming. Pura Vida provides Zumba® instructors for community exercise classes in Faribault and Northfield, a group fitness opportunity that offers a fun and supportive environment for community members to engage in cardiovascular fitness and strength training, which positively impacts their overall health.
Not only are these wellness opportunities life-changing for participants, but for instructors, too.
Meet Victoria Nolasco, Community Zumba Instructor
When Victoria Nolasco was diagnosed with diabetes at age 23, she knew that making the decision to exercise was very important for her health. After a friend invited her to a Zumba class at HealthFinders, she left fascinated.
“After another teacher who taught Zumba left, I decided to take the Zumba instructor course,” Victoria explains. “Last year, the doctor told me that my sugar levels have been in very good control because of healthy food and, most importantly, the effort put into exercising.”
Victoria credits Zumba for changing her life and her health. “Now, I do not take any medication,” she says. “What satisfies me most and fills me with emotion is to see people exercise, laugh, and especially the team support we have in class because we are a great team.”
